Faith and Service

The Order’s vocation joins the defence of the faith with service to those in need — a calling carried forward from its earliest days in Jerusalem.

THE DOUBLE VOCATION

TUITIO FIDEI ET OBSEQUIUM PAUPERUM
The defence of the faith and the service of the poor.

Gerard’s successor, Fra’ Raymond du Puy, gave the brotherhood its Rule and, as the military needs of the Latin Kingdom pressed, grafted onto the nursing vocation a second one: the armed protection of the pilgrim and the defence of the faith.

HOSPITAL FIRST

Before there were knights, there was a hospital.

DEFENCE OF THE FAITH

The armed protection of the pilgrim and the defence of the faith.

SERVICE OF THE POOR

The knight was, and remains, first a servant of the sick.

Our Mission
OUR MISSION

Service Before Honors

The Order’s enduring mission is rooted in the same calling that began in Jerusalem: to serve those in need and carry the Hospitaller vocation forward in every generation.

A VOCATION OLDER THAN ITS TITLES

Before there were knights, there was a hospital. Before there were grand masters, priories, or crosses of eight points, there were sick pilgrims in a foreign city and a small brotherhood who took them in.

Everything that follows in this history — the sovereignty, the sieges, the diasporas, the courtrooms — is scaffolding around that single act, repeated for nine hundred years: the care of “Our Lords the Sick.”

THE GROWTH OF THE HOSPITAL

Femeraid International — with its Ambulance Service, its national teams, and its disaster missions — is the Order’s future as surely as the Jerusalem hospice was its origin.

THE TRANSMISSION OF THE ACCOLADE

The investiture of younger Knights and Dames across the priories, the formation of chaplains, and the orderly succession of leadership carry the Order into future generations.

THE KEEPING OF THE NAME WITH HONOUR

Guarding that discipline, while bearing witness to its own distinct tradition, is how the Federation keeps faith at once with the courts that vindicated it and with the nine centuries it serves.

Nine Centuries of Service

From the Hospital of Jerusalem to the modern Federation, the Order’s history is a continuous story of service, resilience, adaptation, and responsibility.

A VOCATION CARRIED THROUGH THE CENTURIES

Before there were knights, there was a hospital. Before there were grand masters, priories, or crosses of eight points, there were sick pilgrims in a foreign city and a small brotherhood who took them in.

The Federation of the Autonomous Priories understands itself as one of the living branches of that ancient tree, and its story is best told the way the Order has always lived it: hospital first, honours second.

JERUSALEM

The Hospital of Jerusalem and the vocation of service formed the foundation from which the Order grew.

RHODES & MALTA

From Rhodes to Malta, the Order became a sovereign power while preserving its Hospitaller mission through war, siege, medicine, and service.

THE FEDERATION TODAY

The Federation continues that tradition as an active worldwide chivalric fellowship, with autonomous priories, humanitarian service, and a living constitutional structure.
