A LEGACY THROUGH THE CENTURIES

From Healers and Hospitallers
to Defenders of Jerusalem & Malta

For centuries, the Knights of Malta have stood at the crossroads of faith, medicine, military defense, and humanitarian service. From caring for the sick in Jerusalem to defending Malta and serving through times of war, the Order’s history is one of courage, sacrifice, and duty.

The Early Hospitallers

c. 11th Century

The Order’s earliest mission was rooted in care—providing shelter, medicine, and protection for the sick, the poor, and Christian pilgrims traveling through Jerusalem.

The Fighting Knights

12th–13th Centuries

As conflict intensified throughout the Holy Land, the Hospitallers became defenders as well as healers—protecting pilgrims, Christian communities, and the sacred places entrusted to their care.

The Defense of Malta

1530–1565

After establishing their stronghold in Malta, the Knights fortified the island and stood against invasion. Their defense during the Great Siege became one of the defining chapters in the Order’s history.

A Center of Medicine and Service

16th–18th Centuries

The Order expanded its medical mission through hospitals, skilled physicians, and organized care for the sick and wounded, strengthening Malta’s reputation as a center of healing and humanitarian service.

Service Through World War II

1939–1945

During the devastation of World War II, Malta endured relentless attack. The Order’s tradition of courage, medical care, and service remained closely connected to the island’s survival and resilience.

The Mission Continues

Today

The legacy of the Knights continues through the preservation of history, the defense of enduring values, and a renewed commitment to charitable, humanitarian, and educational service.

HEALING AS A SACRED DUTY

The Hospital at the Heart
of the Order’s Mission

From its earliest beginnings, the Order was defined not only by defense, but by care. Its hospitals became places of refuge, treatment, dignity, and service for the sick, wounded, poor, and displaced.

A Tradition of Care

The hospital tradition represents one of the most important parts of the Order’s identity. Skilled physicians, organized medical care, and a commitment to serving those in need helped establish Malta as a center of healing and humanitarian service.

From the treatment of the sick and wounded to the sheltering of the poor and displaced, the Order’s medical mission placed dignity, compassion, and service at the center of its work.
